“Miguel’s Brave Knight” a New Picture Book by Raúl Colón

Miguel’s Brave Knight, the imaginative picture book written by Margarita Engle and illustrated by Raúl Colón was released earlier this month. This fictionalized first-person biography of a young Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, details how he found refuge in his imagination to escape a troubled home life, as well as how he obtained the inspiration to write the famous Don Quixote.

“Colón’s stunning pen-and-ink–and-watercolor illustrations add dimension and life to the story, depicting an olive-skinned cast of Renaissance Spaniards and aging Miguel from round-faced boy to lanky young man.” — Kirkus Review

“Noble portraits, done in pen, ink, and watercolor, recall the work of classic popularizers such as N.C. Wyeth and the D’Aulaires. Even readers who don’t progress to Cervantes’s own work will come away with an indelible sense of the story and its creator.” — Publishers Weekly

A Personal Touch – Raul Colon, Dr. Jill Biden, and the USS Gabrielle Giffords

Back in 2012, Raul Colon was contacted to illustrate former second lady of the United States Jill Biden’s children’s book “Don’t Forget, God Bless Our Troops”. Inspired by her granddaughter Natalie and told from the point of view of a child with a parent on the other side of the world, this acclaimed title was a proud accomplishment for both the author and the illustrator.

The title’s esteemed editor, Paula Wiseman, recently reached out with a very special request from Dr. Biden: she wanted to acquire some of the original artwork to display aboard the USS Gabrielle Giffords, a littoral combat ship of the United States Navy that she sponsored at the ship’s 2015 christening. Deeply honored, Raul was more than happy to help facilitate this request.
