Press for Raul Colon’s Participation at the Eric Carle Museum

Raul Colon received a nice note from the marketing manager at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art this week – there was a wonderful article written about the upcoming Latino storybook exhibition in “PreView Massachusetts”, and Raul’s artwork was featured on the cover! We hope that the program is a huge success.

Just for Fun

Happy Friday to our friends, artists, and colleagues!

I recently came across this fun post and thought it would be a perfect Friday afternoon treat. Apparently, official Hollywood posters are not allowed to be imported to Ghana – thus resulting in some very interesting treatments by local artists. The results are fantastic – some are quite funny, some have surprising depth (despite their naivete), and no matter your impression, we can surely all agree that they are fun twists on the originals. Check out these awesome interpretations here, and have a great weekend!

Rick Tulka’s Parisians

As you may already know, I (“I” being Kate, your dutiful blogmistress) recently took a wonderful trip to Paris. I’ve been feeling a bit nostalgic, as one might imagine – pretty much every minute of every hour of every day.

Rick Tulka’s drawings of Parisians have always been a favorite of mine, and these sketches of people checking out works at the Louvre nearly make me feel like I am there. Enjoy!

The Prospect Heights Craft Fair – Starring Tonya Engel

On Saturday, April 13th, Tonya Engel will be setting up shop at a wonderfully eclectic show while simultaneously helping to raise funds for PS9 in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.

Fans of her dream-like works will be happy to see that she’s bringing along a few brand new original oils, in addition to prints on wood and paper. She is also expanding her brand, however, and will be debuting a few new boutique products such as handmade journals, greeting cards, and sculpted jewelry. No matter what your price point, this incredible artist has made it easy to take a little treasure home!

Take a look here to learn more about this fantastic afternoon. And for those of you that are unable to attend, don’t fret – you may also peruse the artist’s wares at her etsy shop. Just click here!

NEW ARTIST ALERT! Now Introducing: ALE + ALE

Morgan Gaynin has recently been pretty adamant about focusing its attention and efforts on the small roster of amazing artists that we’d already established relationships with. While we get excited to see such beautiful work coming through our doors (and it goes without saying that we are flattered that so many talented individuals think of contacting us), we simply hadn’t felt convinced in recent months.

That is, of course, until the duo ALE + ALE approached us.

When we consider new artists, the first criteria we look for is quite simple: do they make us stop in our tracks? We bookmark a lot of phenomenal illustrators and are proud to keep up with the community, but it’s when one of us yells out, “Ohmigosh, did you guys see this work?!?” that things start getting exciting.

ALE + ALE’s surrealist collage fits right in with the aesthetic that we fall in love with – illustration with a fine art edge. Victorian ladies dance with mustachioed men, a classroom of donkeys studies vintage textbooks, and a classic stovetop espresso machine doubles as a cozy home. The muted palette and subtle textures invite us to dream about the past, yet we’re also reminded of how those from a bygone era may have viewed the future. We like to think it’s borderline steampunk without being contrived or derrivative – these two pay homage while marching to the beat of their own drum.

Please welcome this talented duo by taking a peek at their website by clicking here.

And look at how quickly they are being integrated into our group – we were heartwarmed to see that they met up with Valeria Petrone during her recent trip to Paris. Bonjour, everyone!

The Ladies do VOLTA – Starring Steven Tabbutt

Fans of contemporary art are flocking to New York City, as the Armory Show and VOLTA have just kicked off. It’s an exciting time!

Last night, the Ladies of MGI were thrilled to attend the opening of VOLTA as guests of one of the participants, our very own Steven Tabbutt. Steven also has a very successful fine art career, thanks to his delightful Parisian gallerist, Yukiko Kawase. It was wonderful to spend some time with this phenomenal talent, and we were thrilled to see his latest pieces. You wouldn’t believe how finessed his originals are when viewed in person – we were truly blown away.

If you are in New York, be sure to take in this amazing show.
