A New Award for “BookSpeak!,” Illustrated by Josée Bisaillon

Josée Bisaillon has received yet another award for her work on “BookSpeak!,” and we couldn’t be happier for her.

Félicitations are in order for her newest accolade from the Cybils Awards, which have been given to only 3 Canadians this year. The Cybils Awards are awarded each year by bloggers for the year’s best children’s and young adult titles. The goal of the Cybils Awards is to reward the children’s and young adult authors and illustrators whose books combine the highest literary merit and bonafide “kid appeal.”

Josée received the honor in the poetry category. Youpi!

100 ILLUSTRATORS, Featuring Dave Calver

Since 2005, the Illustration Now! series has become a compelling staple in the illustration community, having featured 600 talented and diverse illustrators from around the world in four popular volumes. Recently, Taschen has decided to crown the top 100 artists of the series in a new publication entitled “100 ILLUSTRATORS”.

You may remember, back in 2009, that the fabulous Dave Calver was invited to be included in one of the original Illustration Now! volumes (and if you don’t, well go on ahead and refresh yourself by clicking here!).

But now we are so pleased to announce that Dave has been invited to participate in this new ’roundup’ volume curated by the Taschen team and designer extraordinare Steve Heller – we like to think of it as a celebration of the best of the best!

Congratulations on this terrific honor, Dave!

Rick Tulka – Totally Mad

A regular contributor to the American cult classic “Mad Magazine” for the last 24 years, Rick Tulka has been very proud to be called one of the “Usual Gang of Idiots.”

In celebration of its 60 years of hijinks, Mad Magazine linked up with Time Home Entertainment to produce the archival book “Totally Mad,” which debuted at #1  on the New York Times’ Hardcover Graphic Novel list. Understandably, Rick was incredibly excited to participate, and he has several pages included in the tome. You can learn more about this awesome compilation on Mad’s Blog.

Susan Gal’s “Day by Day” Receives a Starred Review from Kirkus

It can be a nerve wracking experience waiting for those first reviews to roll in, but what could possibly be more encouraging than a starred review from Kirkus?

Susan Gal’s “Day by Day,” which she both wrote and illustrated, is a heartwarming tale that follows an adorable pig family in their quest to build a home and become a part of the fabric of their Society. Here is what the reviewer had to say:

“Day by day, brick by brick, a community is built in this winning tribute to fellowship and family.

Across a golden prairie, a family of pigs heads west. Their small actions grow in significance as bricks become a house, beloved paraphernalia create a home, neighbors are welcomed and friendships begin. With each handsome spread, the author rephrases the proverb she was inspired by: “little by little, the bird builds its nest.” Words flow on a curvature that matches the lyrical nature of both text and artwork. Sophisticated, digital illustrations done in a pastel color palette dazzle the senses, allowing readers to feel the vastness of sky, the heat of summer; to smell the scent of flowers and fields; and to hear the slow dance-floor melody as they safely drift to sleep. Gal skillfully employs the computer to create a handmade, collage aesthetic. Through her application of textures, she creates a world that’s rich in pattern, color and, most of all, love. As pigs gather around a table, under a festive tree at twilight to enjoy the bounty they have grown, they give thanks.

A luminous celebration of family, food and home. (Picture book. 4-9)

The lovely news was shared with us by Random House’s Nancy Siscoe, with whom Susan collaborated. She sent us an enthusiastic, “I love this book!”

We sure do, too.

Congratulations, Susan!

Fantastique News from Josée Bisaillon

It has been a genuine pleasure to watch Josée Bisaillon’s charming work evolve, and it was a joy to learn that she has received not one, but two fantastic awards in the past week. How nice that the industry thinks she’s as fabulous as we do!

The Great Moon Hoax was recently included in the 2012 edition of Best Children’s Books of the Year by the Children’s Book Committee at the Bankstreet College of Education. The committee looks at over 6000 titles every year and carefully selects the best 600 books based on their literary quality while also considering their emotional impact on children. The MGI Weekly News Roundup

There has been an awful lot going on behind the scenes, and we have been looking forward to sharing this week’s post with you!

Victo Ngai recently traveled back to her native Hong Kong, where she was selected to receive two silver medals and one judge’s pick for the Second Greater China Illustration Awards – a competition that includes illustrators from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau and Mainland China. She explains that this particular accomplishment means a lot to her, as it is the first time that she has won an award in her homeland. She wrote a little bit about the experience on her wonderful blog, which you can read by clicking here. And congratulations, Miss Victo!! She keeps reeling them in.

Here is Victo, third from the left, bottom row:

We were also thrilled to receive some very exciting press. Recently, we announced a very high-profile collaboration between Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden and our very own Raul Colon. Dr Biden’s first children’s book, “Don’t Forget, God Bless our Troops” is a touching story told through the eyes of a child dealing with a parent fighting overseas, and we were thrilled to receive an announcement from Publisher’s Weekly celebrating its release (click here). It goes without saying that we are rather confident that we’ll be hearing an awful lot about this book in the months to come.

And finally, we would like to congratulate the MTA’s Arts for Transit program, with whom we have had the joy of collaborating on several occasions. They have just announced the release of the Arts for Transit on Meridian App, a virtual gallery of all of the mosaics, installations, paintings, posters, art cards and more that pepper the lives of New Yorkers every day. Now, wherever you are in the world, you can always enjoy a little piece of NYC. Take a moment to view a little video announcing this interesting development here.

Here is a poster that was created for the MTA by Sylvie Daigneault:

The Weekly News Roundup!

Wonderful goodies to report this week!

Valeria Petrone, whose own work has regularly made an appearance in the 3×3 Annual, has been invited by publisher Charles Hively to help judge this year’s competition. What an honor! 3×3 has poised itself as being one of the industry’s top sources for the best in contemporary illustration, and I imagine it will be a very difficult process to judge the sheer volume of high caliber work that will come through. Congratulations, Valeria – and good luck!

Will she love it, or….(image by Valeria Petrone)

Shannon Brady announced that he has been invited to participate in the upcoming ‘Illustration Minnesota’ show on February 2nd, from 6-8 pm. The biennial exhibition will celebrate the inventive work of 25 select Minnesota illustrators, and each will exhibit a printed illustration accompanied by the original artwork, an original piece of their choice, and also a personalized and decorated Moleskin. These unique, one-of-a-kind Moleskins will be sold in a silent auction during the exhibition reception, and the proceeds will benefit the CVA Scholarship fund. If you happen to be in or around Minneapolis Saint Paul, click here for more details.

And finally, we have some thrilling news from Raul Colon. We knew that something exciting was a-brewing, but the initial non-disclosure agreement was rather strict…and despite being in this small office, many of us were clueless (and subsequently going bananas). But now that we have learned about the project, it’s rather high profile and we understand the secrecy that surrounded it in the preliminary stages. Jill Biden, our second lady, will be releasing a children’s book with Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers in June of 2012 – and Raul has been asked to illustrate it! All net author proceeds for “Don’t Forget, Nana, God Bless our Troops” will benefit charities to support military families and children, and in honor of the book’s publication, Simon & Schuster will also be making a contribution to a charity that supports the same cause.

“As a military mom and a teacher, I wanted to write this book to make all Americans, especially children, aware of the unique experience of children who have a parent or other relative deployed in our armed forces,” said Jill Biden. “I saw with my own grandchildren just how difficult it is to carry on while you are worried about a parent who is serving in a war zone … and I also learned what a difference it makes when members of the community show support. I hope my granddaughter Natalie’s story, which inspired the book, gives readers some insight into the strength and character of our military families, and encourages them to reach out in their neighborhoods and communities.” Congratulations, Raul, for this exciting assignment! We are looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.

Josée Bisaillon’s “The Great Moon Hoax” Reviewed by the New York Times

Well, this is exciting! Josée Bisaillon’s “darkly imaginative illustrations” were very well received by the New York Times’ Pamela Paul in Sunday’s Paper. We were bowled over as we saw her work trickle in for this recent title by the renowned children’s book author Stephen Krensky, and it is wonderful to know that we are not alone in our enthusiasm. You can take a look at the article here.

Félicitations, Josée!
