This past Saturday, Rick Tulka’s elegant caricature of President Obama had the great opportunity to make the political rounds. The American University of Paris, where Tulka’s wife Brenda works, held a tremendous gala in which one of the guests of honor was the American Ambassador to France. The president of the university purchased the beautiful print of Monsieur Obama, which was then presented to the ambassador the following day:
We have our finger’s crossed that the President himself may actually see this awesome portrait! Please stay tuned to see if the man of the hour ever meets his doppelganger.

Rick Tulka is known for drawing fabulous faces, so it must have been a huge treat when his very own mug inspired such a frenzy of drawings on his Flickr account!
A huge fan of the artistic communities that Flickr cultivates, he was tickled when a friend, Giorgio Bordin, initially responded with an illustration inspired by a photograph from his recent trip to Washington D.C. It seems hard to imagine that anyone was able to anticipate the huge variety (and sheer quantity) of images that were to follow.

Charles Hively, Publisher and Creative Director of “3×3, the Magazine of Contemporary Illustration” recently gave a series of lectures in London and Paris about his illustration views. In Paris, he finally met up with one of his (and our) favorite illustrators, Rick Tulka, at his usual haunt, Le Sélect cafe. Charles is a long time owner of this portrait that captures Dylan’s essence so elegantly:

Charles wrote about their meeting on the 3×3 blog and we thought that you might enjoy taking a look at it here.

Creating sketchbooks bursting with rockers in Tennessee rather than Parisian Cafe denizens was a challenging experience for Rick Tulka as he sloshed through the puddles at the annual 4 day Bonnaroo Music Festival. He wandered among the raucous throngs as the official visual chronicler, capturing the essence of each act and the euphoria of the attendees. This southern farm venue hosted a huge diversity of acts ranging from superstars Bruce Springsteen and David Byrne to up and coming indie darlings such as Chairlift and Crystal Castles. We’ll note here when the Bonnarroo website posts Rick’s images.
Here we see Rick drawing Al Green:

As we’ve noted before, Rick Tulka’s sketches are beautifully presented in the recently published book “Paris Cafe: The Select Crowd”. Rick is an inveterate Parisian people watcher. Most afternoons he is sipping an espresso at “his table” while capturing the inimitable je ne c’est quoi of the cafe’s patrons and staff. Now Rick is honored to be interviewed by the award-winning director Perry Miller Adato for her upcoming PBS documentary entitled “The Luminous Years”. Focusing on Paris from the 1900s to the 1930s, it includes an interview with Rick in which he comments on the wonderfully romanticized life as an American artist in Paris circa 2000.

Rick Tulka is pleased to be participating in a fascinating group art show in Paris. Opening this Saturday, the 11th of April, “Discover the USA, Conteporary Art and Culture from 1960 to Today” will exhibit 50 artists and 200 pieces of Work at Dorothy’s Gallery as well as at the famous Jardin d’Acclimatation until June 28th.

You can check out Dorothy’s Gallery for more information.
And felicitations, Rick!
