And the Results Are In….

3×3 Magazine recently announced the winners for their Children’s Illustration Annual 9, and we are elated to learn that a few MGIers have been included once again.

“Entries were up this year with over 1,700 entries from 35 countries. Forty-percent of our entries were from outside America, making us a truly international competition. As always there were many fine pieces entered that just missed getting the nod from our judges.”

(Click here to read the official 3×3 Magazine Blog post about the judging process)

So let’s get to the artwork, shall we?

First off, we were so happy to learn that Judith Drews’ illustrations for her adorable book “Lily Loves” received a merit award:

Susan Gal’s darling book “Into the Outdoors” had a few pieces selected for the ‘merit’ category, as well:

And last but certainly not least, we learned that Valeria Petrone had 5 of her works accepted into the merit category:

Did we say “merit?” Additionally, Valeria also took home the Bronze medal in the editorial category. How exciting!

“American Illustration” Announces this Year’s Winners

The annual “American Illustration” competition acknowledges some of the most cutting-edge illustrations from the previous year, and it is a great honor in our industry to be included in their pages. We are so happy that this year, three of our artists have made it!

Josée Bisaillon’s whimsical image was ‘chosen’ to appear on the juried web gallery:

Valeria Petrone’s bathing beauties were ‘selected’ to appear in the annual:

And Victo Ngai’s awesome conceptual piece will also appear in the book this year:

The Weekly News Roundup!

Wonderful goodies to report this week!

Valeria Petrone, whose own work has regularly made an appearance in the 3×3 Annual, has been invited by publisher Charles Hively to help judge this year’s competition. What an honor! 3×3 has poised itself as being one of the industry’s top sources for the best in contemporary illustration, and I imagine it will be a very difficult process to judge the sheer volume of high caliber work that will come through. Congratulations, Valeria – and good luck!

Shannon Brady announced that he has been invited to participate in the upcoming ‘Illustration Minnesota’ show on February 2nd, from 6-8 pm. The biennial exhibition will celebrate the inventive work of 25 select Minnesota illustrators, and each will exhibit a printed illustration accompanied by the original artwork, an original piece of their choice, and also a personalized and decorated Moleskin. These unique, one-of-a-kind Moleskins will be sold in a silent auction during the exhibition reception, and the proceeds will benefit the CVA Scholarship fund. If you happen to be in or around Minneapolis Saint Paul, click here for more details.

And finally, we have some thrilling news from Raul Colon. We knew that something exciting was a-brewing, but the initial non-disclosure agreement was rather strict…and despite being in this small office, many of us were clueless (and subsequently going bananas). But now that we have learned about the project, it’s rather high profile and we understand the secrecy that surrounded it in the preliminary stages. Jill Biden, our second lady, will be releasing a children’s book with Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers in June of 2012 – and Raul has been asked to illustrate it! All net author proceeds for “Don’t Forget, Nana, God Bless our Troops” will benefit charities to support military families and children, and in honor of the book’s publication, Simon & Schuster will also be making a contribution to a charity that supports the same cause.

“As a military mom and a teacher, I wanted to write this book to make all Americans, especially children, aware of the unique experience of children who have a parent or other relative deployed in our armed forces,” said Jill Biden. “I saw with my own grandchildren just how difficult it is to carry on while you are worried about a parent who is serving in a war zone … and I also learned what a difference it makes when members of the community show support. I hope my granddaughter Natalie’s story, which inspired the book, gives readers some insight into the strength and character of our military families, and encourages them to reach out in their neighborhoods and communities.” Congratulations, Raul, for this exciting assignment! We are looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.

Valeria Petrone – Success in Tuscany!

Recently, we were excited to announce Valeria Petrone’s exhibition in beautiful Tuscana, and now we are pleased to inform you that the opening was a great success! Valeria kindly sent along a few images from the evening, and we were so blown away to see how seamlessly her distinctive characters transitioned to 3D. Her sculptures look exquisite, and are unquestionably the work of the artist, despite the new medium -

If you happen to find yourself in the area between the 12th and 15th of March, please be sure to stop by and check out this wonderful body of work.

Y congratulazioni, Valeria!

The epic AIAP party in November will be taking place here in New Yawk. If you are in the area, or are yearning to take a trip, this is a terrific event that is not to be missed!

And congratulations once again to this year’s winners.

Guido Scarabottolo and SOI 52

Guido Scarabottolo visited New York for the first time in 30 years to accept his Silver Medal from the 52nd Society of Illustrators Editorial and Publishing Show. It was so exciting for me to meet the award-winning conceptual mastermind after years of corresponding with him via email (both Vicki and Gail have traveled to Milan to visit with Guido in the past).

Here we see, from left to right, Guido’s talented wife Francesca ( a remarkable artist in her own right), Guido, and the ladies, Vicki and Gail:

Congratulations, Guido!

As mentioned previously, MGI’s other participating artists are Valeria Petrone, Beppe Giacobbe, Steven Tabbutt, and Josee Bisaillon. Beppe and Valeria were in Italy, Josee was home in Canada with her new twins, But Manhattanite Steven came for the event and enjoyed the festivities.
