New Artists

A hearty welcome to MGI’s latest additions- A. Richard Allen, Shannon Brady & Andrea U’Ren!

We are excited about these three distinguished artists joining our group.
Richard contacted us after conferring with both Zina and Laura. They both spoke so highly of him, we were intrigued... and now we are thrilled that he has joined MGI.
We met Shannon when he came to NYC for the Society of Illustrators’ Editorial and Book show in February. His accomplished and distinct style really caught our eye as did his professional and friendly demeanor.
Andrea sent work to our “submissions” site back in December. It elicited that rare, collective “WOW!!” from the entire MGI office. A “WOW” is a response not to be ignored....and so Andrea is part of MGI now, too.

Sally's Snowflakes

This is so cool!!! Sally Vitsky created the art for 4 interactive web sites to promote the Smokey Mountain Heritage Festivals- those are Sally's hands doing the cutting! Here is the one for the Winter Festival.

Artist Exhibitions

If you are in the neighborhoods, please stop by the listed galleries to see your colleagues’ work...

Previously on MGI NEWS we posted Dave Calver's upcoming participation in the Sideshow Fine Arts exhibit at the Robert Berman Gallery in California... and here it is! Dave was at the opening and says the show is great fun with all the work beautifully displayed.

Dave has also been invited to participate in another California show- Carnivora, the dark art of automobiles, at the L'Imagerie Gallery in North Hollywood. The show is travelling from LA to Detroit, and was curated by HR. Giger's agent Leslie Barany. It opens May 3rd.

If you happen to be in Milan, stop by the L'Affiche Gallery to view Daniele Melani's (aka Spider) irreverent and zany one man show titled "Easy". The opening is the evening of April 17.

Katherine Dunn is one of five artists participating in the upcoming "Different Spokes" show at Mary Lou Zeek Gallery in Salem, Oregon. The show hopes to inspire people to get out and bike, take notice of nature, reduce the carbon imprint when they can, and just enjoy the freedom of biking. Katherine's piece is called "Bike Bird" - inspired by her own experience of merging with the wind when she rides her bike, feeling as close to a bird as a human can. Visit http://www.zeekgallery.com for details about the May 7th opening.

Lisa Adams is in a few shows this spring: the Women in the Arts show at the Four Starr Gallery in Stonington, CT featured her "Gull's Eye View" painting as their promo image for the show. The show opens April 25th. She was also in the Written Word show at the Mystic Art Center (in Mystic, CT) featured is her illustration titled "The Story of Reincarnation." Last but certainly not least, Lisa is now a regular gallery artist at the catecharlesgallery in Stonington Borough. The next show to feature her work is called The Figure, and it opens May 10.

Awards!!!

We have had quite a few people reporting contest acceptances....As a reminder, please let us know when your work is accepted in any contest so we can share the news.

A. Richard Allen popped across the pond to pick up his Silver Medal at the SI Advertising and Institutional show in March. That was our opportunity to meet in person which was so enjoyable. Along with the award winning image, Richard had 3 other illustrations in the show.

René Milot and Greg Capullo have all been announced as winners in Spectrum: the Best of Contemporary Fantastic Art Annual 15.

Our Canadian artists have won recognition from their home contest, Applied Arts Illustration-
Josée Bisaillon's books The Emperor’s Second Hand Clothes and The Vampire Who Drank Milk were both selected, and not one but four of Anson Liaw's illustrations were winners!

Zina Saunders, Valeria Petrone, Steven Tabbutt, Carlo Stanga, and A. Richard Allen were all accepted into the American Illustration Annual 26. Yeah!

The show of the year- everyone's favorite- the Society of Illustrators! And yes, of course we had lots of artists in.

Representing MGI this year were Beppe Giacobbe, Steven Tabbutt, Valeria Petrone and A. Richard Allen.

Communication Arts selected pieces entered by Zina Saunders, A. Richard Allen & Steven Tabbutt.

Surtex

The annual SURTEX® show will be at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC from May 18-20. This is a show for buyers and sellers of licensed art for products. Visit www.surtex.com to learn more about the exhibition and to register. The NATIONAL STATIONERY SHOW® runs from May 15-18. So if you go on the 18th, you can catch them both. SURTEX® is more for illustrators' purposes and has about 400 booths. THE STATIONERY SHOW® is overwhelmingly huge and less applicable to our business....but fun to take a look at all the new stationery and small gift items. Tips: plan to spend a few hours; leave your portfolio home; bring business cards, pencil and note pad, tote bag for collecting cards and samples; and most importantly.... wear comfortable shoes.

Spring Wishes

Wishing you a wonderful beginning of spring. Perhaps the nice weather will encourage you to get out of your studio and come visit us!
