What is CAREER PERK-UP?
Illustration representatives Gail Gaynin and Vicki Morgan provide private business consultations for illustrators. CAREER PERK-UP was born from the numerous requests of artists to receive objective, informed opinions about their marketing and portfolio presentations from people whose business it is to know these things.

Who are Gail and Vicki?
Gail and Vicki studied Fine Art, graduating from Pratt Institute and Cooper Union respectively. Each has been an illustration and photography representative for more than 20 years. They are involved members of The Society Of Photographers and Artists Representatives, The Graphic Artists Guild, The Society of Illustrators, and are active in guiding individual artists to be productive small businesses through their guest lectures and workshops.

Why do I need this consultation?
If you currently are asking yourself some of the following questions, you have reason for a CAREER PERK-UP:

• Will my presentation get me the kind of work I love to do?
• Does my promotional material reflect this direction?
• Is there a consistent marketing direction among my web portfolios, printed portfolio and promotion materials?
• Can I show different techniques and styles?
• What is the best way to present my work?
• Is it necessary to include actual printed assignments in my portfolio?
• How many pieces should I show?
• How do I market to the “right” people?
• How much should I charge?
• How am I standing in the way of my own success?
• Do I need a rep?
• What will a rep do for me?
• How do I get a rep?

What is a consultation like?
You receive an hour long personalized consultation conducted either at Morgan Gaynin’s New York City office or by telephone. Most appointments are between 12:00 noon and 2:00 P.M., and are scheduled at least a week in advance. To be sure that all your questions are addressed, we ask for a summary email stating the issues you would like to discuss. You needn’t be distracted taking notes, as all our clients receive a recorded version of the entire meeting.

long distance session: After an appointment has been scheduled, you will email your letter outlining what you would like to discuss along with your website address. Then you Fedex your portfolio, a return airbill, any promotions, and a check for the fee to arrive at least 2 days prior to the phone session. This enables your consultant to give your work full consideration and to do any necessary research before the session. Round-trip shipping of the portfolio and the phone call will be at your expense.

in-office session: These will take place in our office, located near Union Square. You will bring your portfolio, promotions, and the fee to the appointment, but your email letter and website address should be sent to your consultant at least 2 days before your meeting.

How much does a session cost?
The consultation fee is $200, payable by check or cash.

TESTIMONIALS
“Vicki helped me to focus in on what I really love most and do best and by so doing to dramatically increase my income and the enjoyment of my work…”
- Andrea Brooks

“Thank you, Gail, for what I consider a really informative and worthwhile consultation. I've decided to take your advice with regard to giving myself a deadline goal to complete a total portfolio presentation, prospective client research, and a plan to position my “store” in the national market. I think being removed from New York…has made it too easy for me to adopt a provincial attitude toward expectations for success and my own ability to compete nationally. When my portfolio is ready, I’d like to mail it to you and schedule another consultation.”
- Tim Reilly

“A few weeks ago I asked the Graphic Artists Guild if somebody existed who could critique my body of work and flat tell me if I was still viable or had become dated and over the hill. They gave me the name of artists’ reps, Morgan Gaynin Inc. By the luck of the draw I drew Gail Gaynin’s name. She was professional; she was positive in what would work and what wouldn’t; she was kind; and she was supportive. All I can say is…Gail G. is a bloody marvel, and I can’t say enough good things about the lady.”
- Richard Anderson
